| Car Design History - Car Body Designer |
The two houses have worked closely together for some eighty years and created north of fifty concept and production models in that time. But while Fiat prospers madly in its post-GM alliance life, Bertone has gone from one struggle to another of late. Rumors abound now that Fiat is actually taking on Bertone as a special rejuvenation project. Regardless of what the real story is, we say BRAVO!
Take a look at what is sure to be one of the sentimental favorites of the upcoming Geneva auto show in early March. Still nameless at the time of this writing, this tiny two-seater barchetta uses the recent Fiat Nuova Panda 100HP’s underpinnings. Seeing as all we didn’t love on the Fiat 100HP Panda we drove was the soft rolly-poley feel in hard curves, this dramatic lowering of the body mass is certain to improve things somewhat. We will drive the little sucker at a later date.
Along with his student Giorgetto Giugiaro and Sergio Pininfarina, Nuccio Bertone, who died in 1997, is one of the greats of Italian car design. He knew that the battles of the highly competitive automobile market are often decided by a car's impact on the emotions. So his primary goal was to overcome mediocrity, especially in sports cars. His Lamborghini - the Miura, Espada, and Countach - Ferrari Dino 308 GT4, Alfa Romeo Carabo, and Lancia Stratos zipped along racetracks and roads like arrows, with extremely pointed fronts and compact backsides.
Since the 1930s, Bertone had systematically turned the bodyshop opened by his father, Giovanni, in 1912 into a modern company, styling such luxury cars as the Fiat 2800 Cabriolet. His breakthrough came in 1954 with the modest but elegant Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint, which was originally designed for a limited series of 500 but went on to be in production for thirteen years. Other classic Bertone designs |include the 1964 Fiat Spider 850 and the low-slung, sporty 1972 Fiat X1/9. In more recent years Bertone's company designed the Opel Kadett Cabrio (1987), the Opel Astra Cabrio (1993), and the Fiat PuntoCabrio (1994).

GENEVA 2007 PRESS PREVIEW
Aggressive and refined. Futuristic and minimalist. In extreme synthesis, that is the new Bertone-designed concept car with which the Company is celebrating its 95th anniversary at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show (8-18 March 2007).
Characterised by dynamic proportions and a dynamic style, the new concept car is a true open two-seater sports model on Fiat Panda 100 HP mechanicals that harks back explicitly to the Fiat 500 barchetta designed by a young Nuccio Bertone in 1947 as a one-off for his own personal use in races.
Bertone’s choice of the Fiat brand to celebrate its 95th anniversary was both natural and emotional. Natural because Fiat is the Italian brand par excellence. Emotional because the birth of Bertone as a coachbuilder of “special” vehicles is closely linked to the history of the Fiat brand. The historic relationship between the two companies has lasted for more than eighty years and has generated more than fifty highly successful models counting concept cars, one-offs and production cars, from the 850 Spider to the X1/9, from the Ritmo Cabrio to the Punto Cabrio.

| GENEVA 2006 PRESS PREVIEW |

GENEVA 2006 - PRESS PREVIEW
A concept car that interprets the coupé-cabriolet theme with aggressive elegance. This is what will be given its world debut by Bertone at the 76th Geneva International Motor Show (2-12 March 2006).
The new Bertone-designed concept, as always the result of styling research above and beyond the dictates of fashion, interprets the theme of the sports car with retractable hard top in a quite new way. Developed on a Fiat Grande Punto base, the Bertone concept slots into the compact car market (segment B) while being at the same time an absolute novelty in so far as this segment contains no retractable hard top coupé-cabriolets with four “real” seats. This concept in fact sets a new benchmark in terms of interior space and quality of life on board: the cabin layout is the result of meticulously attentive volumetric and ergonomic studies geared to levels of comfort and roominess comparable only to a higher segment car.
The styling research, developed by Bertone in a coupé-type vehicle, stands out for its highly dynamic graphics: sloping front, high waistline, snug, muscular tail. This concept car is an evolution of one of Bertone’s pet themes: the open sports car accessible to the young and to the public at large, nippy and manoeuvrable, with a strong personality.
